Program for National Energy for All until 2030 launched
On 12 November, the President of the Republic, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, launched the National Energy Strategy (ENE) under the slogan National Energy for All Program by 2030.
The ceremony took place in one of the tourist resorts of the city of Maputo and was attended by several guests, totaling about five hundred individuals. Among those present were members of the Council of Ministers, the President of the Supreme Court, members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of cooperating institutions in the Energy Sector, diverse personalities, the Press and members of Civil Society.
The solemn act, with the room full of personalities, consisted of the following moments. First, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Ernesto Max Tonela, made the contextualization of the elaboration and launching of ENE; the National Director of Energy, Pascoal Bacela, presented the sublime guiding document. Representatives of the traditional cooperation partners in the Sector (Norway, Sweden, the European Union and the World Bank) subsequently spoke. Finally, the President of the Republic launched the National Strategy for Energy for All by 2030.
In his official address for launching the Program, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi defended that energy is an instrument to combat poverty, one of the key sectors for development with a strong multiplier effect in the Mozambican economy.
As pointed out, the National Energy Strategy 2018-2030 aims to bring energy to all Mozambicans who do not yet have access and is aligned with the Government’s Five Year Program and the Sustainable Development Goals. The goal is to ensure Universal Access to Energy by 2030, through a technically feasible and financially sustainable approach.
For the President of the Republic, ENE is a response to the people’s cries in various parts of the country and comes to solve real problems taking into account that it will extend the network to more rural areas of the vast Mozambican territory. In his address, the Mozambican top official said that the implementation of that program will change the fortunes of many compatriots.
The Ministry of Energy Mineral Resources and Renewable Energies said in its contextualisation intervention, be a government initiative developed by the ministry that directs, with the objective of bringing electricity to those that do not yet have, besides being in line with the development sustainable and inspired by successful cases around the world.
The National Energy Director, Pascoal Bacela, explained that 72 percent of Mozambicans still do not have access to electricity and the idea is to ensure that they have until 2030, being in line with the Five-Year Program and the development objectives sustainable development.
Maputo City Governor Iolanda Cintura, who also spoke at the ceremony in her capacity as host, said she believed the positive impact on Mozambican life of the Program would be appreciated and that Maputo was chosen for its launch.
Already Marie Anderson, representative of the Swedish Embassy, defended the commitment to clean energy for the sustainable success of the project. He stressed that his country will continue to provide assistance to Mozambique, including the Program launched.
Speaking on behalf of the World Bank, Mark Lundell, stressed that the strategy responds to the current challenges of the country because it makes clear the role of each of the players in the process. According to him, ENE represents a new paradigm in the goal of universal energy access. Lundell said that there should be more transparency in the process and that partnerships with the private sector should emerge.
At the site of the event and to accompany the ceremony, was an exhibition that illustrates the historical evolution of the country’s electrification and prospects until 2030. The Head of State visited it before the ceremony began, and the guests appreciated it at the end.
