“[Nampula and Zambézia] are the most populous [provinces] in the country, with agricultural production being developed, so we want to support these processes with a package of interventions we call Promove,” said the EU ambassador in Mozambique, António Sanchez, who is visiting the province of Nampula since Monday, quoted in a statement sent to the Lusa news agency.

The interventions with this support will highlight six points, namely road rehabilitation (€ 12 million), sustainable energy (€ 94 million), agriculture (€ 68 million), nutrition (€ 30 million), biodiversity protection 13 million euros) and improvement of the business environment (12 million euros), the latter extending to the whole country.

According to António Sánchez, the choice of the provinces of Nampula and Zambézia to implement Promove, to be developed in coordination with the Government, is due to the “enormous challenges” that the regions face in terms of poverty and malnutrition, highlighting the priority of these provinces in cooperation with the European Union.

The EU is one of Mozambique’s main partners, with support in several basic areas of the country.

At the beginning of June, during a donors’ conference, the European Commission announced the mobilization of 200 million euros for the reconstruction of Mozambique, due to the destruction caused by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, which hit Mozambique in March and April of this year, causing a total of nearly 700 dead.
